With improved Internet access as an objective, while going in for a new phone would it be better to go in for dual SIM (GSM+CDMA) and use CDMA for internet access rather than a cell phone with 3G, which is currently only available via MTNL/BSNL?

Also, how do the currently available Internet access technologies compare – CDMA (RIM/Tata Indicom) vs. GSM (AirCell/AirTel/Vodaphone)?

gsm and cdma, both, are on the verge of being phased out in the next 4-5 years, although it might take sooner than that. cdma, though faster than gsm, is too costly even compared to 3g. mtnl/bsnl have taken the right steps in the right direction to make 3g affordable. i’ve come across instances even in remote rural areas in uttar pradesh where people have started using video calling with bsnl. people in delhi/mumbai are slowly becoming hooked on to the exciting concept of video calling.

nowadays, 3g handsets are selling starting rs.5500. and that too, with secondary camera for video calling. the mid-budget sets are anywhere between 8000 and 15000. the high-end fones start from there and go upto 35k. of course, for around 12k price, you can get a windows mobile/android 3g handset with all the works.

use gsm/cdma only if you’re sure you can recover the costs from your “extra” income source. otherwise, my straight, to-the-point advise: go for mtnl/bsnl 3g.
